Citi warns Bitcoin faces an outsized quantum computing threat as breakthroughs accelerate!

Citi has flagged Bitcoin as carrying an outsized vulnerability to quantum computing, warning that the pace of recent hardware breakthroughs is bringing the threat closer to relevance than the market currently prices in. The concern centres on Bitcoin's elliptic-curve cryptography, which secures wallet addresses and transaction signatures — a sufficiently powerful quantum machine running Shor's algorithm could, in theory, derive private keys from public ones.

The warning lands at a sensitive moment. Google's Willow chip and a string of competing announcements have compressed the timeline estimates that cryptographers once used to dismiss near-term quantum risk.
